Oh, love that will not let me go
I rest my weary soul in thee
I give you back the life I owe
And in your ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be

My life is not my own
It’s yours
My life is not my own
I know it’s yours

Oh, light that follows all my way
I yield my flickering torch to thee
And my heart restores its borrowed ray
That in your sunshine’s blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be

So light a fire in my heart
And I’ll burn for you
So light a fire in my heart
And I’ll burn for you

Oh, joy, that seeks me through the pain
I cannot close my heart to thee
I trace the rainbow through the rain
And feel the promise is not in vain
That morn shall tearless be

So anoint me with joy
And joyful I will be
So anoint me with joy
And joyful I will be

Oh, cross that’s lifing up my head
I dare not ask to fly from thee
I lay in dust life’s glory dead
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be

We will sing:
Holy, holy
Is the King of Kings
And we will sing:
Holy, holy
Is the King of Kings

On that day we will sing
We will join with the angels and we will sing

"Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you! You were within me, but I was outside, and it was there that I searched for you. In my unloveliness I plunged into the lovely things which you created. You were with me, but I was not with you. Created things kept me from you; yet if they had not been in you they would have not been at all. You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness. You flashed, you shone, and you dispelled my blindness. You breathed your fragrance on me; I drew in breath and now I pant for you. I have tasted you, now I hunger and thirst for more. You touched me, and I burned for your peace." — Augustine’s "Confessions"

I am Not Yours

I am not yours, not lost in you,
Not lost although I long to be
Lost as a candle lit at noon,
Lost as a snowflake in the sea.

You love me, and I find you still
A spirit beautiful and bright,
Yet I am I, who long to be
Lost as a light is lost in light.

Oh plunge me deep in love—put out
My senses, leave me deaf and blind,
Swept by the tempest of your love,
A taper in the rushing wind.

"I am Not Yours" by Sara Teasdale (1884-1933)

My choir is singing an arrangement of this poem by Randall Stroope. It’s an absolutely lovely piece and the meaning of the poem is very straight forward and purely secular. It is, after all, a love story and a tragic one at that. The Lover is not “lost” in her Beloved though she wants to be so desperately. Perhaps they had a falling out, perhaps he never noticed her at all, but whatever it is the message is clear that he does not share Sara’s sentimates. She longs to be deep in his love and to lose her identity in him.

While we were singing through this song I first took it just as it was meant to be taken: A purely secular love story. I would be lying, also, if I said that I didn’t relate to Miss Sara and if I didn’t have someone in my mind as we sang. It was difficult for me to get the words out because I was burdened so deeply with these pesky thoughts. Stroope ends the choral piece much more beautifully than Sara ends her poem, I believe. He expresses that the Lover is, in fact, completely lost, but not lost as she wishes to be in her Beloved. He says: “I am lost. Lost as a candle lit at noon. Lost as a snowflake in the sea. Lost as a candle, lost as a light. Lost, but not lost in you.”

But when I read these words, suddenly I heard a whisper, "Beloved, why are you lost? Why are you not lost in me? I long for you to be lost in me, I am desperate for it."

It hit me so suddenly that I had to quickly and quietly hold back the embarrassing rush of tears that I felt touching my eyes. How foolish I had been! How pathetically and stupidly lost—but not lost in You, not lost in the right thing, not losing and at the same time finding myself in You. I was too focused on schoolwork, too set on heartaches, too worried about finances, concerned with doubts and plagued with questions, lost completely like a snowflake in the sea…

But not lost in You. You my true Lover who would never deny me the opportunity to share in Your love. You who made me. You who bought me with Your own blood. You my Savior who went to the cross to find my lost soul.

Oh God, I have been so lost and lost in all of the wrong things. I am not Yours, not lost in You although I so, so desperately long to be. Find me, God, and plunge me deep in Your immeasurable love.

Make me Yours.

Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder

Let us love and sing and wonder,
Let us praise the Savior’s Name!
He has hushed the law’s loud thunder,
He has quenched Mount Sinai’s flame.
He has washed us with His blood,
He has brought us nigh to God.

Let us love the Lord Who bought us,
Pitied us when enemies,
Called us by His grace, and taught us,
Gave us ears and gave us eyes:
He has washed us with His blood,
He presents our souls to God.

Let us sing, though fierce temptation
Threaten hard to bear us down!
For the Lord, our strong Salvation,
Holds in view the conqueror’s crown:
He Who washed us with His blood
Soon will bring us home to God.

Let us wonder; grace and justice
Join and point to mercy’s store;
When through grace in Christ our trust is,
Justice smiles and asks no more:
He Who washed us with His blood
Has secured our way to God.

Let us praise, and join the chorus
Of the saints enthroned on high;
Here they trusted Him before us,
Now their praises fill the sky:
“Thou hast washed us with Your blood;
Thou art worthy, Lamb of God!’

I want to tell all of my amazing friends this. I know lovely girls with their confidence tainted by the thoughtless words of others and they deserve to know what I know: They’re beautiful. Don’t be afraid by the album cover. It’s a lovely piano ballad. Here are the lyrics:

Paint yourself a picture
Of what you wish you looked like
Maybe then they just might
Feel an ounce of your pain

Come into focus
Step out of the shadows
It’s a losing battle
There’s no need to be ashamed

Cause they don’t even know you
All they see is scars
They don’t see the angel
Living in your heart

Let them find the real you
Buried deep within
Let them know with all you’ve got
That you are not your skin

When they start to judge you
Show them your true colors
And do onto others
As you’d have done to you

Just rise above this
Kill them with your kindness
Ignorance is blindness
They’re the ones that stand to lose

Well they don’t even know you
All they see is scars
They don’t see the angels
Living in your heart

Let them find the real you
Buried deep within
Let them know with all you’ve got
That you are not
You are not your skin

Isn’t it amazing how in light of God’s love and grace, everything else seems so small? I mean, think about it for just a moment. Reflect on what has been done for you and the hope you have for the future as well as the present. In the midst of your greatest struggles, put your faith in the One who gave His life for you. If He can calm the storms in nature, surely he can still the restless hearts of men. When we trust in Him, we cannot help but find that He truly is our joy.

Yes, You are my joy! And I’m so in love with You I can barely hold it in.
